Rotorua Grove

A brand-new house on an exposed rise, with a bare section behind it. The before photos tell it straight: dry lawn, setout lines sprayed on the grass, and a high timber fence holding back the hill. All view, no shelter, nowhere to sit.

We paved a courtyard in large-format pavers with pebble borders, wrapped it in built-in timber bench seating, and built a timber surround for the spa pool. Timber slat screens run the boundary. Raised sleeper beds hold the veggie garden, a pebble drainage strip runs the length of the house, and new lawn ties the lot together.

A sheltered outdoor room where the bare lawn was. Somewhere to sit, a spa pool with a proper surround, raised beds already growing food, and a garden that suits the hill instead of fighting it.
