Kelburn - the finished build
Case study

Kelburn

Kelburn, Wellington

All projects

A steep, overgrown hillside terraced into a working garden - sleeper and brick retaining, timber stairs and a new level lawn.

01

The problem

A steep hillside dropping away below the house, buried under years of growth, with a run of old cracked concrete steps as the only way down. Too steep to mow, too rough to use.

What we built

We cleared the slope and terraced it. Retaining in timber sleepers and brick, new timber stairs stepping down the hill with a handrail, raised beds cut into each terrace, and a level lawn where the ground used to fall away. On a site like this, access is half the job - materials, spoil and machinery all have to move up and down the slope.

03

The result

A hillside you can walk, plant and pick from. The terraces hold vegetable and flower beds, the stairs link the whole slope back to the house, and the new lawn gives the section flat ground it did not have before.
